NaruSaku - Suicide

”I guess this is what needs to be done.” Naruto thought to himself.
The woods were silent this time of year, they always where. A single bird forgot its place in the winter wonder land and allowed its voice to be heard against the cold winter sky. They had been here once before, the three of them together in a joyful moment, they had been laughing together back then, but the only sound that could be heard now was a single bird, singing its song in a silent winter wonderland. The Wind rushed through the leaves, suggesting that it had places to be, friends waiting beyond the forest, and this was just a detour through a silent part of the forest.

Naruto shivered as the cold wind rushed past him, his jacket no longer offered protection against the cold; it was torn to pieces, ripped open by swords and fangs, and splattered with the blood that had spilled from the wounds. But even though his clothes were torn, there were no longer a single scratch on his body, as usual his curse had become his salvation. But that should be true no more, she had suffered because of his curse, she had suffered because of his enemies, she had suffered because of him, and worst of all, she had suffered by his hand.

It had to end, he had known that for a while, he could no longer justify his existence to himself, he had no right to live when his very existence brought pain and suffering to all those around him. No one would miss him, the events of the day before this had made sure of that, so much death and suffering had been caused that day, all because of him. Naruto felt his eyes watering again – it was not the first time he had cried, but it would be the last. He didn’t want to die, but he didn’t have a choice in the matter, only by dying could those he loved live without fear of his enemies, without fear of him. He pulled out his last shuriken from the holster on his leg and tried to figure out if he had everything worked out.

He had left for the forest as soon as the battle had been over and he had carried Sakura to the hospital, she would survive, they had told him that much before he left. The journey to this place deep in the forest had taken him over 20 hours, and he hadn’t even allowed himself a single break, because he needed to do this while he still had the determination he needed. He had left a note in his apartment, telling them that he hated the village and that he would leave never to come back again. It had been painful to write the note, but it was better for them to hate him, that way they wouldn’t miss him, and they wouldn’t search for him.

They would never find his body, they would remember him only as a traitor who disappeared without a trace, never to be seen again. A tear forced its way down his cheek, they would curse the day they had met him, regret the time they had spend with him. The tear was no longer lonely on its journey down his cheek. And they would celebrate the day he had finally left their lives.

Naruto was crying openly as he reached forward with his shuriken and cut a tiny string in half. It had been done, from all sides he heard the sound of branches flicking as the force that held them back was removed, Naruto dropped the shuriken he was holding and watched as kunais and shurikens soared towards him from all sides. It had to be done this way, this way not even the power of the nine tailed could heal his wounds. He closed his eyes and embraced the fate he had chosen for himself and as he felt the first shuriken drill its way into his leg he remembered an old saying: Sacrifice the few for the good of the many.
As Naruto collapsed in the snow a single bird fell silent at last.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Naruto! NARUTO!!” was someone yelling at him?
“Quiet down, he needs complete rest.” Rest? Why would he need rest, he was dead not tired. Dead? Why would he be dead? He needed to think, to remember, he… he needed to sleep.

“Is he going to be all right” a new voice… was it talking about him?
“Hokage-sama says she don’t know, he has lost a lot of blood and many of his organs are badly damaged.” A doctor? Was he sick? The voice continued speaking. “If you want to stay, you need to keep your voice down, make sure you don’t wake them up.” Them? Who them? There was only one him, and he wasn’t sleeping he was… he was dead… wasn’t he?

Crying, someone was crying, why were they crying? Had he done something wrong? Had someone been hurt? Hurt! It all came flooding back, the ambush, she had been in danger, the Nine tailed taking over. He had killed them, he hadn’t meant to do so, but he couldn’t control himself, and he had… he had hurt her badly. But why was he alive, he should have been dead; he had killed himself… hadn’t he?

But if he was dead then why could he feel someone’s head pressed against his leg and hear someone crying? Naruto slowly opened his eyes, he was in a hospital. He blinked a couple of times, to get used to the light, before looking down to see, who was crying.

It was a girl, her pink hair was untidy and even dirty. She was wearing a Konoha headband, but even in that state Naruto found her beautiful and he knew exactly, who she was.
“Sakura” he whispered in a hoarse voice, and at the sound of it Sakura’s crying came to a halt, and she slowly raised her gaze to meet his. Her eyes where watery and red from crying, and her face had marks from the undying stream of tears, that had been flowing down her face, ever since they had found him. Her eyes spoke volumes of sadness and disbelief. Her mouth formed a perfect ‘O’ as if she could not believe her eyes.

“Naruto!” she yelled, throwing her arms around him and once again crying her heart out, but this time due to a completely different feeling. “I thought I had lost you… I thought you were going to die.”

For a moment Naruto returned the embrace, breathing in the wonderful smell of her hair and feeling her smooth skin through her clothes, but then his hands found something else: the bandages. He had hurt her!

The thought alone hit him like a sledgehammer and he panicked. He threw off her embrace and retreated away from her, he was in such a hurry that he hardly noticed falling off the bed and hitting the floor.

“No, NO! I can’t be here, I can’t be alive! I have to go; I have to get away from here,” Naruto’s eyes were darting all over the place, as he staggered backwards knocking over furniture and medical equipment before spotting the door and making for it. As he grabbed the handle to the door, he once again found himself in the embrace of the woman he loved. Sakura had her arms around him and was holding him back.
“Don’t leave me again Naruto,” she whispered her tearful face pressed against Naruto’s back.
“I have to,” he said, fighting to keep control of his voice. “I am dangerous, I can’t explain it, but I have to leave.”
“I know,” she whispered, “I know what is hidden inside you, but I don’t want you to leave.”

Like that, he lost his greatest secret, he was no longer alone, she knew, it didn’t matter how she knew, all that mattered was that she did. But it wouldn’t change anything, on the contrary it meant that she would be in even more danger than before.
“Then you know why I have to leave, you will be in great danger if I stay here.” He said gently removing her arms and opened the door.
“I don’t care… I love you Naruto.” For a moment Naruto froze and then, before Naruto knew it, she was kissing him, and he was kissing her. Sakura gently led him back to the bunk bed, she lay him and herself down on the bunk bed and held his hand softly. Naruto was scared and confused, how could she love him after what he had done, he had seen the wound himself, it had been deep, the pain must have been beyond comprehension.

It was Sakura who broke the silence, “I watched you out there,” she said “when we were ambushed. They went for you first, but you kept them away, you didn’t get hurt before you started protecting me. Even when you were almost bleeding to death you kept fighting for my life more than your own. And when they finally got to me,” Naruto shivered as he remembered the sword that had been pressed against Sakuras neck, how could he had let that happen? How could he… Sakura broke his trail of thoughts by gently squeezing his hand. She was smiling at him, with tear filled eyes she continued: “I saw you, and I saw something in your eyes that I had never seen before: fear.” Sakura whipped the tears off her face and squeezed Narutos hand again. “I have never seen you scared like that before, your face lost all its color in seconds. You were already half dead at the time, but not before I was in danger did you allow the Nine tailed to interfere. I saw you rip apart those men as if they were toys, it looked like you were enjoying it. But I know it wasn’t you, it was a demon, and when your claws scratched me in order to kill the last of the attacker.” This time Sakura felt shivers down her spine as she saw Naruto’s face in her mind. “I saw your face twist in pain, as if you had committed a crime so horrible you yourself couldn’t even comprehend it. I saw how you tore your own clothes to shreds, as if causing yourself harm was the only thing you could do to regain control of your body. I watched as you returned to your own self and lifted me into your gentle arms with a broken heart and tearful eyes.” Sakura turned her head and looked Naruto in the eyes. “You didn’t hurt me Naruto, you risked your life to save me, and then you tried to sacrifice it just so that I could be safe. You have done so much for me, how could I anything but love you?” Sakura kissed Naruto with a compassion he had never felt before, and he kissed her back.

“I love you too” he whispered and embraced her.
