Burning old Bridges

Det her er noget af det bedste jeg har skrevet et stykke tid. Lad være med bare at afskrive det som en latterlig Fanfic, det her er faktisk en ret følelsesmæssig historie, og den skal læses som sådan.

”MARIO!!!” Mario peaked through the curtains. Damn! It was her alright. Of course it was her, who else could have found him so fast. She had even brought backup, looked like she was actually going to take him in, not in a million years could he allow that.
“Mario come out!” her magnified voice echoed through the empty hallway into the dirty kitchen where Mario was sitting against the sink breathing heavily, his hand clutching his left shoulder where the energy shot had burnt through his shirt left a black spot in his skin. He could barely move his left arm anymore, if only he had had a Super shroom, but he hadn’t seen one of those in years now.
“Mario… Don’t do this. Don’t make me come in after you. Please, listen to reason.” Her voice was trembling, Mario took off his signature cap and wiped his forehead, he knew that she would to kill him if she had to. Maybe things could work out if he just… no! He had already taken the first step, there was no going back. He slowly staggered to his feat, this house had turned out to be a dead end, what the hell could he do?

Samus took off her helmet as the third police craft arrived; she spoke into the microphone incorporated into her powersuit.
“Mario… Don’t do this. Don’t make me come in after you. Please, listen to reason.” She tried to keep her voice clear and hard, this was her job she was trained for this. Just because it was someone she knew didn’t mean she could go easy on him, not after the crime he had committed.
“The house is surrounded Mario, you just might as well come peacefully, you know I don’t want to hurt you.” The 5 police officers had surrounded the house, armed with plasma rifles they were a force to be reckoned with. Samus stood silently for upwards to half a minute waiting, hoping for a response, but all she heard was the hover train stopping at the station a few blocks away and the sound of a loud stereo on the other side of the street. Samus was giving the order to move in as the dirty front door swung open and Mario staggered into view. His overalls were torn and he was covered in dirt, these last few days on run had taken their toll on him, even now she wanted to hug him, to hold him close just as she had done all that time ago. No! Don’t mix emotions into this, he is a criminal, he needs to do his time.
“Samus…” He said leaning against the side of the door, breathing heavily. “Please just let me go.”
“I… I can’t Mario. I have a duty to this town.”
“I didn’t do it! You must believe me, you know me I could never do something like that!”
“Just come with us, we can work things out.”
“No we can’t! I am being set up, this is beyond the police, this goes all the way to the top.”
“Just tell me what is going on, don’t shot me out of your world again, don’t make me go through this again.”
“I… I’m sorry Samus” With a painful look in his eyes Mario jumped over a meter into the air and gripped the first floor window-frame, quickly making his way onto the roof. Samus saw him leap to the next roof in a trance as one of the officers called her name.
“Samus! What do we do?” She stood silent for a few seconds before she put her helmet back on. “Set after the criminal, use lethal force if necessary.” She said with a stern voice as the mirrored visor hid her watery eyes.

Mario felt the glass splinter around as he smashed through a window on the third floor. He rolled around on the floor for a few seconds trying to find out which way was up, before he realized he had crashed into a children’s bedroom. The ruckus had awakened the two small children sleeping in the room, they looked terrified at Mario as he got to his feet.
“I’m so sorry, I… I really am.” He left the room silently through the door and located the door to the hallway without problems. He heard one of the kids finally breaking down crying as he ran down the long hallway, passing apartment door after apartment door as he ran. He opened the window at the far end of the corridor and leaped onto the roof of a smaller building. He felt the wind in his hair, damn it he must had dropped his hat in the bedroom, no time to return now, it was a small price to pay for a clean getaway. Mario slowly made his way to street level, his shoulder causing him pain beyond belief, he hadn’t been hurt this bad since the lost levels. Mario staggered down the dirty road, he was barely fit to stand on his legs, he had to find Dr. Mario if he wanted to live through the night.
“Please stop Mario.”

Samus’es rocket back pack sent her soaring through the air leaping from building to building following Mario’s trail. She picked up his cap in a room with two crying kids and caught up with him a few blocks from there. She landed silently some 15 meters from him. She was holding his cap in her left hand and her arm cannon was pointing at him as she spoke.
“Please stop Mario.”
He slowly came to a halt; still clutching his wounded arm he slowly turned to face Samus. His face was sweaty and his breathing was unstable, his voice sounded so weak.
“Just let me go Samus.”
“I can’t. I just can’t. You know that Mario, you of all people knows that. “
“I have to leave. I won’t go to jail, I can’t go to jail. Not now, not after what happened. “
“I… I can’t let you go. If you try to leave then I will have to shoot you.” A tear fell from her eye as her arm cannon started buzzing, slowly charging up. Mario slowly turned around and started walking away, his legs barely able to lift him.
“Stop! Don’t force me to do this!” another tear joined the first inside her helmet as her arm cannons buzzing reached its maximum. “Mario… please, please stop.” He kept walking, slowly moving away from her.
“If you take another step then I have to shoot you.” Tears were flowing freely now blurring her vision, the buzzing of her canon ringing in her ears, her hand clutching the red cap.
She felt it as if everything moved in slow motion, she saw him take the step, felt her finger release the trigger, letting the charge shot fly through the air. She saw it glide through the air as Mario took yet another step, not even trying to dodge out of the way. She saw the shot strike its target squarely in the back; she closed her eyes as it started eating its way through his red shirt. She couldn’t breathe, she gasped for air ripping off her helmet. She fell to her knees, crying in his cap, she could still smell his hair, but she would never feel it between her fingers again.
